Gray

Gray is the color of compromise — between black and white, between all colors. It is neutral, balanced, and detached. In Western culture, gray symbolizes maturity, intelligence, and composure. Gray is often associated with aging (gray hair), but also with wisdom and experience. Light gray is calming and clean, while dark gray is serious and authoritative. Too much gray can feel cold and impersonal.

Gray is the most versatile neutral in design. It is used as a background color in modern web design, as it provides a clean, unobtrusive canvas. Light gray is a popular alternative to white for backgrounds — softer on the eyes. Dark gray (charcoal) is a sophisticated alternative to black. Gray pairs with virtually any color: with bright colors for contrast, with pastels for softness, or with other neutrals for a monochromatic palette. Warm grays (with brown undertones) feel cozy, while cool grays (with blue undertones) feel professional.

Gray has been used in art since prehistoric times — created by mixing black and white pigments. In the Renaissance, gray was used for underpainting (grisaille technique) to create the illusion of sculpture. In the 19th century, gray became fashionable in men's clothing — the 'gray flannel suit' became an icon of American business culture. The word 'gray' comes from the Old English 'grǣg', and is spelled 'grey' in British English.
