The Color Names Reference
This database combines seven major color naming systems into a single, searchable reference:
- CSS3 (139 colors) — The W3C web standard named colors, recognized by all browsers.
- ISCC-NBS (267 categories) — The Inter-Society Color Council / National Bureau of Standards scientific color naming system, published in 1955. The closest thing to an official color naming standard.
- X11 (231 colors) — The Unix X Window System color names, the ancestor of CSS named colors.
- Resene (1,280 colors) — New Zealand paint company color names, widely used for their practical, real-world naming.
- XKCD (949 colors) — Randall Munroe's 2010 crowdsourced color survey with 222,500 participants. Colloquial, natural-language color names.
- Crayola (135 colors) — Culturally familiar crayon names from Crayola.
- Community (meodai/color-names, MIT licensed, 6,072 colors) — Community-curated color names from thousands of contributors.
Every color is classified using the ISCC-NBS system — a scientific standard that assigns each color to one of 267 non-overlapping categories based on the Munsell color solid. This means colors are organized by perceptual relationships, not just alphabetical order.
Each color entry includes CIE L*a*b* and OKLCH perceptual coordinates, WCAG contrast ratios against white and black, and source attribution showing which naming systems recognize it. Paste any hex code in the search bar to find the nearest named colors.
Standard Color Names by Family
The 505 standard-tier colors curated from the CSS3, X11, Crayola, and ISCC-NBS systems, grouped by hue family. Names with a dedicated page link to a deeper look at the color's meaning, shades, and pairings. Use the search tool above to browse all 7,457 colors in the full database.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many named colors are in the database?
The database contains over 7,000 named colors compiled from seven authoritative sources: CSS3 (148), ISCC-NBS (267 categories), X11 (455), Resene (1,379), XKCD (954), Crayola (120), and the meodai community collection. Many colors appear in multiple systems, so the total unique entries reflect the union of all sources.
What is ISCC-NBS?
The ISCC-NBS system is a color naming standard developed by the Inter-Society Color Council and the US National Bureau of Standards in 1955. It classifies colors into 267 descriptive categories based on the Munsell color solid, such as "vivid red," "light blue," and "dark yellowish green." It is the closest thing to an official, scientifically grounded color naming standard.
Can I search by hex code?
Yes. Paste any hex code (like #ff5500) into the search bar and the tool will find the nearest named colors by perceptual distance (CIE Delta E). This is useful when you have a color value and want to know what it is called.
Are these color names copyrighted?
Individual color names are factual designations and are not subject to copyright protection under US law. The database compiles names from public domain sources (ISCC-NBS, XKCD), open standards (CSS3, X11), and licensed sources (Resene, meodai). Full attribution is provided in the Sources section above.
