What Is Color Mixing?
Color mixing is the process of combining two or more colors to produce a new color. The way colors mix depends on the medium: mixing paint produces different results than mixing light, and mixing ink for print follows yet another set of rules. Understanding the difference between these mixing systems is essential for artists, designers, and anyone who works with color across media.
Subtractive Color Mixing (RYB and CMYK)
Subtractive mixing applies when you combine pigments — paints, inks, dyes. Each pigment absorbs (subtracts) certain wavelengths of light and reflects others. As you add more pigments, more wavelengths are absorbed, and the result gets darker. Mix enough pigments together and you approach black.
The traditional subtractive model is RYB (Red-Yellow-Blue), which has been taught in art schools for centuries. In RYB, the three primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. Mixing any two primaries produces a secondary:
- Red + Yellow = Orange
- Blue + Yellow = Green
- Red + Blue = Purple
Mixing all three primaries produces a neutral brown or dark gray. The RYB model is scientifically imperfect — modern printing uses CMYK (Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Key/Black) for a wider, more accurate color gamut — but RYB remains the standard in art education and is the model most people learn first.

Additive Color Mixing (RGB)
Additive mixing applies when you combine light — on screens, displays, and stage lighting. Each color of light adds wavelengths rather than absorbing them. As you add more colors, the result gets brighter. Mix all three primaries at full intensity and you get white.
The additive model is RGB (Red-Green-Blue). Its primary colors are red, green, and blue:
- Red + Green = Yellow
- Green + Blue = Cyan
- Red + Blue = Magenta
Notice that the secondary colors of RGB are the primary colors of CMYK, and vice versa. This is not a coincidence — the two systems are mathematical inverses.
Tints, Shades, and Tones
Beyond mixing hues, you can modify any color by adding white, black, or gray:
- Tint — hue + white. Produces lighter, pastel versions. Pink is a tint of red.
- Shade — hue + black. Produces darker, richer versions. Navy is a shade of blue.
- Tone — hue + gray. Produces muted, desaturated versions. Slate is a tone of blue.
These modifications let you create depth and variation within a single-hue palette without introducing new colors.

Is CMYK the same as RYB?
